Best of Slovakia Stage 5 High Tatras and Kežmarok

You will finally cycle up to reach the giants. High Tatras are the most spectacular mountain range in Slovakia, with the highest peaks in the whole Carpathian mountain range.

From Spišská Sobota, cycle gradually up the hill to reach the main road for a while to Veľký Slavkov. Here, turn left to a gravel road. Then it is a combination of paved and grave sections to reach Starý Smokovec, the oldest and charming centre of the High Tatras. Visit a small museum dedicated to a still alive sherpa tradition, or just sit for a coffee and enjoy a pleasant atmosphere. From here, it is mostly descent on asphalt road or a designated cycling path on the left side of the road to Tatranská Lomnica.

Tatranská Lomnica is one of the most popular resorts in High Tatras, from where you can take a cable car up to Skalaté Pleso mountain lake, or even to Lomnický štít peak (2632 m). But be prepared that it can be crowded and pricey. In Tatranská Lomnica, you can also visit the Tatra National Park Museum with some cool stuffed animals and a bit old-fashioned retro exhibition.

Continue on a gravel designated cycling path to Tatranské Matliare. Turn right and cycle on a paved road without traffic in the forest. After crossing the main road, again take a designated cycling path to Spišská Belá and Strážky chateau. Here you can stop by to visit Strážky gallery dedicated to one of the most significant local painters, Ladislav Mednyánszky.

From here, it is not far to reach Kežmarok mostly on roads without traffic. Be careful when crossing the bridge across Poprad river. Kežmarok is a charming historic town with a medieval castle, Kežmarský hrad (9am – 5pm, 8€) and a picturesque square.

From Kežmarok, cycle on a cycling path to Vrbov and Žakovce and across the field on gravel road back to Poprad.
