Day 8, Spiš Castle - Košice Tue, 20 Sept

The last stage of the journey takes you from Spiš Castle across the Carpathian landscapes to the metropolis of Eastern Slovakia, Košice. The route passes mostly only smaller villages, so be ready to bring enough water and snacks with you. Despite there are some small shops and pubs where you will be able to buy some refreshments here and there. It is a longer route, so beer at the end of your journey in the second largest city in Slovakia will be well deserved!

From Spišské Podhradie, you follow the road with some traffic across Spišské Vlachy and town of Krompachy. Behind one of the largest “favelas” behind Krompachy you can decide whether to continue on the main road through Margecany, or you go left to smaller roads. Both routes meet after 14-18 kilometres near Klenov. Going on the main road means to save 4 kilometres and 100-200 metres elevation gain, so if you are okay with the traffic, feel free to continue. Mapy.cz unfortunately have a bug these days so show that cycling across the bridge in Margecany is not possible, but do not be discouraged by this. If you need navigation through Margecany, simply click “car” mode in the app for that section until Margecany.

Behind Klenov, traffic is low and you enjoy the ride all the way to Košice.

Košice is a bustling town with picturesque historic city centre. Allow some time to walk around its streets and squares. There are plenty of things to see, visit, places to eat etc. Visit the information centre for up-to-date inspiration where to go and how to spend your time.

If the weather is too bad or you have enough cycling, you can also take a local train from Spišské Vlachy or Krompachy to Košice. 🙂 From Spišské Vlachy, the train leaves at 9:46, 11:46 or 13:46. The journey lasts 1 hours. In this case you will have enough time to enjoy Košice. You can buy train tickets directly at the main train station in Spišské Vlachy. But be careful, the train station is a bit further from town, there is no train from the smaller station “Spišské Vlachy mesto”.
